Where to Plant:

For the richest colour and strongest stems, select a position that benefits from a full day's sun. They must have well-drained soil, as the bulbs are prone to rotting in persistently wet conditions. If your garden has heavy clay, incorporate horticultural grit when planting. Their slender stems and dark, dramatic flower heads work wonderfully when drifted through the middle of a border, creating striking punctuation points amongst grasses and other perennials.

How to Plant:

Plant the bulbs in the autumn, from September to November. Dig holes approximately four times the depth of the bulb itself, which provides stability for the tall flower spike. Space the bulbs at least 15-20cm apart to allow for good air circulation and for the individual flower heads to be appreciated. For a bold and impactful display, plant in generous groups rather than singly. Water the area once after planting to settle the bulbs in.

Aftercare:

These alliums are commendably drought-tolerant once established and will rarely require watering. Allow the foliage to die back and turn yellow naturally after flowering has finished; this is a vital period where energy is stored in the bulb for the next year. The decorative, dark seed heads can be left on the plant to provide extended interest well into the autumn, or you can snip the stem at the base if you prefer a tidier look.
