Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

It is the double-flowered 'sport' (a natural mutation) of the classic and ever-popular Single Late Tulip 'Prinses Irene', which is famous for its purple flames.

A truly fragrant and fiery beauty, 'Orange Princess' rightfully holds the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding performance and stunning appearance. Its magnificent double blooms are a stunning tapestry of bright clementine-orange, elegantly flushed and feathered with strokes of deep red and rich maroon. The colour combination is electric, glowing like a hot coal in the spring sunshine. It's a wonderfully fragrant and sturdy variety, with its shorter stature making it perfect for containers, window boxes, or the front of the border where it will not be overwhelmed by taller plants. It's a reliable and perennial performer, bringing a touch of royal splendour to the garden year after year. The combination of its rich scent, vibrant colour, and robust nature makes it a firm favourite among gardeners.

Where to Plant:

A richly coloured and fragrant double late tulip, 'Orange Princess' produces beautiful, peony-like blooms of a vibrant orange, often streaked with hints of maroon and rose. The substantial, heavy flower heads mean it is essential to plant them in a sheltered position, protected from strong winds and heavy spring rain which can easily damage the blooms. A spot in full sun with fertile, very well-drained soil is required. It is an excellent choice for a bold statement in a border or for a luxurious display in a large container.

How to Plant:

Tulip bulbs should be planted late in the autumn, ideally during October or November. This late planting helps to reduce the risk of the fungal disease, Tulip Fire. Dig a hole and plant each bulb at a depth of at least twice its own height, which is typically about 15cm (6 inches) deep. Ensure the pointed tip is facing upwards. Space the bulbs about 10-15cm apart to give each large flower enough room to open fully.

Aftercare:

For the most reliable and impressive display, fancy double tulips like this are best treated as annuals, with fresh bulbs being planted each autumn. To try and encourage them to return, you must deadhead the flower as soon as it fades to stop it setting seed. It is then essential to allow the foliage to die back and yellow completely, for at least six weeks, before lifting the bulbs, drying them, and storing them somewhere cool and dark until autumn.
