Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

As a member of the 'Perfection' series of tulips, it has been specifically bred for its exceptionally large and perfectly formed, multi-petalled blooms.

A giant among tulips, 'Lilac Perfection' produces enormous, fully double flowers that are the epitome of springtime opulence. The blooms are a stunning, uniform shade of rich lilac-purple and are so densely packed with petals that they are often compared to peonies or even antique roses. These magnificent flowers can reach up to 10cm (4 inches) across when fully open, creating an incredibly lush and impactful display in the late spring garden. Held on tall, strong stems, they are surprisingly resilient for their size. 'Lilac Perfection' is perfect for adding a block of solid, luxurious colour to the back of a border and makes one of the most spectacular cut flowers you can grow, with just a few stems creating a lavish bouquet. The flowers are also noted for their light, sweet fragrance, adding another layer of appeal.

Where to Plant:

This is a sumptuous double late tulip, producing large, fully-packed, peony-like flowers of a beautiful, rich lilac-purple. The substantial, heavy flower heads mean it is essential to plant them in a sheltered position, well protected from strong winds and heavy spring rain which can easily cause the stems to snap. They require a spot in full sun with fertile, very well-drained soil. It is an excellent choice for adding a touch of luxury to borders or for a dramatic display in large containers.

How to Plant:

Tulip bulbs should be planted late in the autumn, ideally during October or November. This late planting helps to reduce the risk of the fungal disease, Tulip Fire. Dig a hole and plant each bulb at a depth of at least twice its own height, which is typically about 15cm (6 inches) deep. Ensure the pointed tip is facing upwards. Space the bulbs about 10-15cm apart to give each large flower enough room to open fully.

Aftercare:

For the most reliable and impressive display, fancy double tulips like this are best treated as annuals, with fresh bulbs being planted each autumn. To try and encourage them to return, you must deadhead the flower as soon as it fades to stop it setting seed. It is then essential to allow the foliage to die back and yellow completely, for at least six weeks, before lifting the bulbs, drying them, and storing them somewhere cool and dark until autumn.
