Where to Plant:

Hyacinths thrive in fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny or lightly shaded position. They are perfect for front-of-border displays, patio pots, and window boxes where their powerful fragrance can be fully appreciated. Choose a spot sheltered from strong winds to protect the heavy flower heads.

How to Plant:

Plant bulbs in autumn, from September to December. Plant 10-15cm deep and about 10-15cm apart. For container planting, place them closer together for a fuller display, ensuring the tips are just below the soil surface. Always wear gloves when handling hyacinth bulbs as they can cause skin irritation.

Aftercare:

Once flowering has finished, deadhead the faded flower spike, but allow the foliage to die back naturally. This process feeds the bulb for next year's display. In subsequent years, the flowers may be less dense, which can create a more delicate, informal look in borders.
