Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Dick Wilden' is a 'sport'—a naturally occurring genetic mutation—of the world-famous and incredibly reliable Large-Cupped daffodil 'Carlton'. It has all of Carlton's toughness but with a full, double flower.

A cheerful and classic Double daffodil, 'Dick Wilden' brings a big, bold splash of sunshine to the mid-spring garden. The large, peony-like blooms are incredibly full and packed with layers of ruffled petals. The main flower is a bright, clear buttercup-yellow, which provides a sunny backdrop for a densely packed centre of smaller, frilly petaloids in a contrasting, softer primrose-yellow. This two-tone yellow effect gives the flower wonderful depth and texture. It is a very strong and reliable grower with sturdy stems that hold the heavy blooms well. It's a fantastic choice for creating an impactful display and is also an excellent and long-lasting cut flower.

Where to Plant:

This is a flamboyant and showy double-flowered daffodil, producing large, shaggy flower heads of bright, sunny yellow, often likened to a lion's mane. It is a fantastic choice for making a bold statement in spring borders and is also well-suited to growing in large containers. Due to the weight of its heavy, multi-petalled flowers, a position that offers some shelter from strong winds and heavy rain is beneficial to keep the stems upright. It thrives in full sun or light shade in well-drained soil.

How to Plant:

The bulbs should be planted in the autumn, anytime from September to November. Dig a hole and plant each bulb at a depth that is roughly twice its own height, which is typically about 15cm (6 inches) deep. Place the bulb in the hole with its pointed tip facing upwards and cover with soil. Space the bulbs at least 10-15cm apart to give each plant enough room to develop properly. Water once after planting to settle the soil.

Aftercare:

After the large flowers have faded, you can snip off the spent blooms to tidy the plant and direct all its energy back into the bulb. The most important rule for ensuring a good display next year is to allow the foliage to die back naturally for a minimum of six weeks after flowering has finished. Do not cut it back or tie it up during this crucial period of regeneration.
