Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Lavatera is also known as the Tree Mallow. The 'Zebrina' variety is a hybrid of two other species and is prized for its unusually prominent and beautiful striped markings.

A spectacular and fast-growing Mallow, Lavatera 'Zebrina' is a real showstopper that brings an exotic, tropical feel to the garden. It is a robust, upright, bushy perennial that produces stunning, hollyhock-like flowers throughout the summer. The blooms are a lovely pale, silvery-lilac or soft pink, and each petal is dramatically veined with deep, velvety, maroon-purple stripes that radiate from the centre. This striking pattern gives the plant its 'Zebrina' name. The flowers are produced in abundance along the tall, leafy stems, creating a long-lasting and very impressive display. While technically a perennial, it is often short-lived (2-3 years), but grows so quickly and flowers so profusely in its first year that it is well worth treating as an annual or biennial. It's perfect for quickly filling a gap in a new border.

Where to Plant:

Often known botanically as Malva sylvestris 'Zebrina', this is a striking and easy-to-grow plant that produces tall spires of pale flowers, each intricately veined with dark purple. It is a perfect choice for a cottage garden scheme or for adding vertical interest to the middle of a sunny border. It is not fussy about soil but does best in a reasonably well-drained spot in full sun or very light partial shade.

How to Plant:

Plant young, pot-grown plants from spring to summer. Dig a planting hole that is the same size as the pot, place the plant inside ensuring it sits at the same depth, and backfill with soil. Firm the soil down gently and give the plant a thorough watering to help settle it in. Space plants about 45cm apart to give them room to develop.

Aftercare:

This plant is a short-lived perennial that is often best treated as a hardy annual. The tall flower spikes may require staking with canes or twiggy pea sticks to prevent them from flopping over. It self-seeds readily, so you can either deadhead the faded flowers to prolong the display or allow some to set seed to ensure you have new plants for the following year. At the end of the season, the parent plant can be removed.
