Baby's Breath 'Paniculata' (Gypsophila)

Where to Plant:

Commonly called Baby's Breath, this plant is famed for its frothy clouds of tiny white flowers. It is an absolute essential for a cottage garden or cutting patch. It must have a position in full sun and, most importantly, prefers a well-drained, alkaline or neutral soil; it will not thrive in acidic conditions. It develops a long, deep taproot and strongly resents being moved, so choose its final planting spot with care. It is perfect for adding a soft, airy texture to a border.

How to Plant:

Plant young, container-grown plants in spring or summer. Dig a deep hole to accommodate the developing taproot, ensuring it is at least as wide as the pot. Place the plant in the hole so it sits at the same depth as it was in its container. Backfill with soil, firm it down gently and give the plant a thorough watering. Space plants at least 60-90cm apart to allow for their wide, airy habit.

Aftercare:

Once established, it is very drought-tolerant and requires little maintenance. Taller varieties will benefit from some support before the heavy flush of flowers begins; staking with twiggy pea sticks is ideal. After the first wave of flowers has faded in mid-summer, you can shear the whole plant back by about half. This will keep it neat and often encourages a second, less dramatic flush of flowers later in the season.
