Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

This Crocus was named in honour of Prince Claus of the Netherlands, the late husband of Queen Beatrix. It remains one of the most popular and recognisable of all the "snow crocus" varieties.

A truly exquisite and highly celebrated variety, 'Prins Claus' is a crocus of exceptional beauty and distinction. It holds the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit for its stunning appearance and reliable performance. The flowers are large for a Chrysanthus type, with inner petals of pure, glistening white. The outer three petals provide the drama, each heavily blotched with a large, deep royal purple marking, creating a bold and breathtaking contrast against the white. When the flower is closed, it resembles a beautiful, hand-painted piece of porcelain. On sunny days, the blooms open wide to form a beautiful star shape, revealing bright orange stamens. It is a vigorous grower that flowers early in the season, producing multiple blooms per bulb and looking stunning in rockeries, pots, and at the front of borders where its intricate detail can be appreciated.

Where to Plant:

This striking and robust crocus is perfect for creating bold splashes of colour in early spring. It is ideal for planting at the front of sunny borders, naturalising in lawns, or growing in rockeries and containers. To get the best display from its beautiful white and deep purple bicoloured flowers, choose a position in full sun or light, dappled shade. Well-drained soil is essential to prevent the corms from rotting in wet winter conditions.

How to Plant:

You should plant the corms in the autumn, anytime from September through to November. Plant each corm with the pointed tip facing upwards, to a depth of about 8-10cm. For a naturalistic effect when planting in borders or grass, gently throw a handful of corms onto the area and plant them exactly where they fall. Space them at least 8cm apart to allow them room to multiply and form satisfyingly dense clumps over the years. Water once after planting.

Aftercare:

These crocuses are incredibly low-maintenance. The most vital part of their care is to allow the narrow, grassy leaves to die back completely after flowering has finished. Do not cut them back or tie them up. If they are planted in a lawn, avoid mowing the area for at least six weeks after they have flowered. This allows the corm to store enough energy to produce a beautiful display the following spring.
