Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

The sharp edges of the Pampas Grass leaves can give a nasty cut, similar to a paper cut. It's always recommended to wear thick gloves and long sleeves when handling or cutting back the plant.

The famous Pampas Grass, Cortaderia selloana is a large, dramatic, and architectural ornamental grass that makes a bold statement. It forms a big, dense, tussocky clump of long, narrow, arching leaves with very sharp, serrated edges. In late summer, the plant sends up tall, erect, cane-like stems that rise high above the foliage. These stems are topped with magnificent, large, feathery, silvery-white or creamy-beige plumes (flower panicles). These plumes are incredibly showy and persist well into the winter, providing excellent structure and interest. It is a very tough and resilient plant, tolerant of drought and coastal conditions. It is perfect as a standalone specimen plant in a lawn or a large gravel garden where its size and form can be fully appreciated.

Where to Plant:

Commonly known as Pampas Grass, this dramatic plant demands a location in full sun and a great deal of space to show off its magnificent, feathery plumes. It is an ideal specimen plant for a large lawn, the back of a very wide border, or for creating a screen. It tolerates most soils but performs best in fertile, well-drained ground. It is crucial to plant it away from paths or seating areas as the edges of its long leaves are extremely sharp.

How to Plant:

The best time to plant Pampas Grass is in the spring, to give it a full growing season to establish before winter. Dig a very generous hole, much wider than the rootball. Place the plant in the hole, making sure it is planted at the same depth as it was in its pot. Backfill with soil, firm it down well to remove any air pockets, and water it in thoroughly. Ensure it is kept well-watered during its first summer.

Aftercare:

The main task is the annual haircut. In late winter or very early spring, before the new growth appears, the old foliage should be cut back hard to about 30cm from the ground. This is a tough job that requires sturdy, protective gloves, long sleeves, and sharp tools like shears or even a hedge trimmer. Once established, it is very drought-tolerant and requires no feeding. The spectacular plumes can be left for winter interest before the annual cut-back.
