Where to Plant:

This spectacular indoor bulb, which produces huge, fully double, rich cherry-red flowers, should be grown in a pot indoors. Choose a pot that is only slightly wider than the bulb itself, as they enjoy being snug. Place it in a warm, very brightly lit position, such as on a windowsill, to encourage strong, upright growth. Once in flower, moving it to a slightly cooler spot out of direct sun will help the blooms last longer.

How to Plant:

Bulbs are best planted in the autumn for winter flowering. Use a good quality, well-drained potting compost. Place the bulb in the pot so that the top third, including the pointed neck, remains exposed above the soil level. Firm the compost around the bulb. Water it once, thoroughly, after planting and then do not water again until you see the first green shoot appear. Overwatering before it is in active growth can cause the bulb to rot.

Aftercare:

Once growth starts, water regularly when the top layer of compost feels dry. Begin feeding with a balanced liquid fertiliser every two weeks once the leaves are well-developed. Turn the pot regularly to prevent the flower stalk leaning towards the light. After the flowers have faded, cut the stalk down to just above the bulb but keep the leaves. Continue to water and feed the plant through the spring and summer. In late summer, stop watering and allow the bulb to become dormant in a cool, dark place for 8-10 weeks before restarting the cycle.
