Allium 'Silver Spring'

Where to Plant:

Select a sunny position in well-drained, fertile soil to get the best from this beautiful and fragrant allium. It produces pretty, dome-shaped clusters of white flowers, each with a distinctive dark pinkish-red eye. 'Silver Spring' is a superb choice for the front or middle of a border, where its sweet scent can be enjoyed. It mixes wonderfully with other perennials and provides a gentle, sophisticated splash of colour in early summer. It also performs well in large containers.

How to Plant:

The ideal planting time is in the autumn. Plant the bulbs with the pointed tip facing upwards, to a depth of approximately 10-15cm, which is about three times the bulb's own height. Space them around 15-20cm apart from one another. This will give them enough room to form a healthy clump, but is close enough to create a full and impactful display when they are in bloom. Plant in groups of at least three or five for a pleasing effect. Water once after planting to settle the soil.

Aftercare:

This is a reliable and easy-to-care-for perennial bulb. Once the flowers have faded, it is vital that you allow the foliage to die back and yellow naturally. This process feeds the bulb and ensures it has enough energy stored to flower well the following year. The faded flower heads are quite neat and can be snipped off at the base if you wish, or left on the plant. It is commendably hardy and will return year after year with very little attention.
