Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

This allium is the love child of two famous parents! It gets its incredible colour from 'Purple Sensation' and its spidery, star-like shape from Allium christophii.

A shower of starry purple perfection, 'Purple Rain' is celebrated for its unique, airy flower heads. Unlike its more densely packed cousins, this variety has a more open structure, giving each individual star-shaped floret its moment to shine. The 5-inch blooms are a vibrant shade of purple-magenta and sit atop strong, dark stems, creating a wonderful contrast. This hybrid combines the rich colour of 'Purple Sensation' with the spidery, crystalline structure of Allium christophii, resulting in a flower that is both dramatic and delicate. It’s perfect for weaving through grasses and perennials for a naturalistic, meadow-like effect.

Where to Plant:

To get the most from its spectacular, large purple flower heads, a location in full sun is essential. This variety boasts the rich colour of 'Purple Sensation' but with a more open, starry form, making it a magnet for bees. It must have well-drained soil, so if your soil is heavy, incorporate horticultural grit when planting. Its medium height makes it incredibly versatile, perfect for the middle of a border where its airy globes can float amongst other perennials, or for planting in large containers.

How to Plant:

Plant the bulbs this coming autumn, between September and November. Dig a hole and plant each bulb to a depth of approximately 15cm, ensuring the pointed tip is facing upwards. This depth will give the stems a firm anchor. Space the bulbs about 20-25cm apart to allow the wide flower heads to be seen clearly without overcrowding. Planting in generous drifts or bold groups of five or more will create a truly stunning effect in early summer. Water just once after planting.

Aftercare:

Once flowering is over, allow the foliage to wither and turn yellow naturally. This is the most critical period for the plant, as it is when the bulb draws back energy to fuel the following year's display. Do not be tempted to remove the leaves while they are green. The spent flower heads are very ornamental, retaining their structure as they dry, and can be left standing to provide architectural interest well into the autumn months.
