Behold the celestial firework of the plant world, the Star of Persia. This allium produces an enormous, airy globe, often reaching up to 10 inches in diameter, composed of as many as 100 individual, star-shaped florets. Each metallic, silvery-lilac flower has a remarkable amethyst sheen, creating a sparkling, ethereal sphere that seems to hover in the garden. It blooms a bit lower to the ground than its giant cousins, making it a perfect statement piece for the front or mid-border. After flowering, the architectural seed heads are just as stunning, drying to a beautiful silvery-tan that persists for months. Use them to add long-lasting structure to the garden or bring them indoors for magnificent dried arrangements that capture their starry magic.
Also known as Allium albopilosum, its species name christophii honors the Russian botanist and explorer Stepan Christophorovitch, who collected plants in Central Asia.

Where to Plant:
To get the best from its magnificent, starry flower heads, choose a site in full sun. This allium, often known as the Star of Persia, demands very well-drained soil and is perfectly suited to gravel gardens or the front of a sunny border where the intricate, silvery globes can be admired up close. Heavy, waterlogged soils must be avoided to prevent the bulbs from rotting over winter. They are also excellent for growing in containers.
How to Plant:
Plant the bulbs in the autumn. Position each bulb with the pointed tip facing upwards, about 15cm deep, which is roughly three to four times the bulb's own height. Space them generously, at least 20-30cm apart, as the giant flower heads need plenty of room to expand without looking crowded. Planting in bold groups creates a truly spectacular architectural feature in early summer. Water once after planting to help the soil settle.
Aftercare:
This is a remarkably self-sufficient plant. Once established, it is very drought tolerant and should not require any additional watering. After the flower fades, allow the foliage to wither and die back naturally, as this feeds the bulb for the following year's display. The real highlight for many gardeners is the dried seed head, which is even more impressive than the flower. These can be left on the plant for months of structural interest or cut for stunning indoor decorations.
We partner with elite growers to provide only top-size, professional-grade bulbs. Bigger bulbs mean stronger roots and more spectacular blooms.

I ordered the mixed hyacinth collection and the scent in my garden this April was absolutely heavenly. Every single bulb produced a strong, beautiful flower and the colours were stunning together. A fantastic purchase, I'll be back for more next year!
