Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

The sharp, clean contrast between the red and white petals makes 'Peppermint Stick' one of the most popular and recognisable forms of the Lady Tulip.

A delightful and eye-catching cultivar of Tulipa clusiana, 'Peppermint Stick' is a variation of the classic "Lady Tulip". It shares the same wonderfully elegant and slender form, with tall, graceful stems that sway in the breeze. The buds are slim and pointed, opening in the sunshine to reveal beautiful star-shaped flowers. The petals have a striking and distinct colour pattern that gives the plant its name: the outer three petals are a clear, candy-cane cherry-red, while the inner three petals are pure, crisp white. This creates a fantastic, pinwheel-like effect when the flower is open. The heart of the flower has a small, dark purple base. 'Peppermint Stick' is a fantastic perennialiser, quickly forming enchanting drifts of colour and bringing a sense of fun and classic charm to the garden.

Where to Plant:

This is a beautiful and very elegant species tulip (Tulipa clusiana), prized for its slender, candy-striped appearance. The flowers are carmine-red on the outside and open in the sun to reveal a pure white interior. It absolutely must have a position in full sun, as the flowers will not open without it. The soil must be very well-drained and gritty. It is a small, graceful variety, perfect for a rockery, a gravel garden, or the front of a sunny border where it will reliably naturalise.

How to Plant:

The small bulbs should be planted in the autumn, from September to November. Dig a hole and plant each bulb at a depth of about 10-15cm (4-6 inches), with the pointed tip facing upwards. They are most effective when planted in generous, dense clumps rather than being scattered singly, as this creates a beautiful display when the starry flowers open together. Space the bulbs about 8-10cm apart.

Aftercare:

This is a very low-maintenance and rewarding tulip that will reliably multiply and return year after year with minimum fuss, provided it has a sunny, well-drained spot. There is no need to deadhead the flowers. You must allow the narrow, grassy foliage to die back completely on its own before removing it. A good baking in the sun during their summer dormancy is all they need to ensure a good show the following spring.
