Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

The name 'Pipit' refers to a small, unassuming songbird, which perfectly captures the delicate, cheerful, and natural charm of this lovely multi-headed daffodil.

A truly delightful and deservedly popular Jonquilla daffodil, 'Pipit' is celebrated for its delicate beauty, sweet fragrance, and unusual colour change. Each stem produces between two and four dainty flowers. The blooms open with both the outer petals and the central cup in a lovely soft, lemon-yellow. As the flowers mature, the cup magically fades to a beautiful creamy-white, creating a stunning two-tone effect, with some flowers on the same plant showing different stages of this transition. It is an excellent perennialiser and holds the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit for its reliability and outstanding charm. It's a must-have for any gardener who loves fragrant, elegant, and interesting flowers.

Where to Plant:

A delightful and fragrant Jonquil daffodil, 'Pipit' is prized for producing up to three flowers per stem and for its unusual colouring. The flowers open a uniform soft lemon-yellow, but the cup gradually fades to a beautiful creamy white, creating a lovely reverse bicolour effect. Jonquils need a position in full sun and well-drained soil that can bake in the summer. It is an excellent choice for a sunny rockery, the front of a sheltered border, or for growing in pots where its sweet scent can be enjoyed.

How to Plant:

You should plant the bulbs in the autumn, ideally in September or October to give them a long time to root. As the bulbs are smaller than standard daffodils, a planting depth of about 10-12cm (4-5 inches) is sufficient. Place the bulb in the hole with the pointed tip facing the sky. They are most effective when planted in generous clumps to create a full display. Space them about 10cm apart.

Aftercare:

This daffodil is very low-maintenance. There is no need to deadhead the small flowers. The most important rule is to let the fine, rush-like foliage die back completely on its own for at least six weeks after flowering has finished before you tidy the area. This is essential for the bulb to build up the energy reserves needed to return and flower again the following spring. It will happily multiply where conditions are suitable.
