Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

The botanical name Achillea is said to come from the Greek hero Achilles, who, according to legend, used the leaves of the yarrow plant to treat the wounds of his soldiers during the Trojan War.

A superb and richly coloured Yarrow, 'Red Velvet' is celebrated for its large, flat flowerheads and its fade-resistant, vibrant colour. It forms an upright clump of beautiful, aromatic, fern-like, grey-green foliage. From early summer, strong, branching stems rise above the foliage, topped with large, plate-like clusters (corymbs) of tiny, daisy-like flowers. The colour is a stunning, deep, velvety crimson-red with contrasting tiny yellow centres. Unlike some older red varieties, 'Red Velvet' holds its intense colour very well, even in strong sun. It is a fantastic plant for a sunny, dry border, providing long-lasting colour and a wonderful, flattened texture that contrasts beautifully with spires and cones. It is highly attractive to pollinators and makes an excellent, long-lasting cut or dried flower.

Where to Plant:

Choose a location that receives full sun for the most vibrant blooms. While it can tolerate partial shade, full sun is ideal. Well-drained soil is crucial, as Achillea 'Short Red' will not tolerate waterlogged conditions, especially in winter. It's highly adaptable to various soil types including sandy or loamy, but good drainage is key. Its compact size (around 30-40cm high) makes it perfect for the front of borders, edging paths, or tucking into containers. It thrives in cottage gardens, rockeries, and mixed perennial beds, attracting bees and butterflies.

How to Plant:

Plant Achillea 'Short Red' in spring after the last frost or in late summer/early autumn to allow establishment before winter. If planting pot-grown plants, dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball. Place the plant in the hole so that the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface, then backfill with soil, gently firming it down to remove air pockets. Space plants about 30cm apart to ensure proper air circulation and prevent disease. Water thoroughly after planting to help establish the roots.

Aftercare:

Once established, Achillea 'Short Red' is remarkably drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. During its first year, ensure it's well-watered, especially during dry spells. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to issues like powdery mildew. Fertilization should be minimal; an annual application of a balanced fertilizer in early spring can promote strong growth. Deadhead spent blooms regularly throughout the flowering period (June to September) to encourage continuous flowering. Cut back the foliage in late autumn or late winter to prepare the plant for the colder months and encourage fresh new growth in spring. Divide mature clumps every 3 to 4 years in late autumn or early spring to maintain vigor and prevent overcrowding. Achillea 'Short Red' is generally pest-resistant, but ensure good air circulation to deter powdery mildew.
