Where to Plant:

One of the most famous and reliable varieties, 'Red Lion' produces huge, classic, velvety-red flowers that are a magnificent sight in winter. This tender bulb must be grown in a container as a houseplant. Select a pot that is a snug fit for the bulb, leaving just a little space around the sides. A warm, brightly lit spot is essential to encourage the strong flower spike to grow tall and straight.

How to Plant:

Plant the bulb in autumn, around 8-10 weeks before you want it to flower. Half-fill the pot with a well-drained potting mix, place the bulb on top and fill in around it, leaving the top third of the bulb exposed. Press the compost down firmly to secure the bulb. Water it well once, letting any excess drain away completely, then place it in a warm spot and wait for growth to start before watering again.

Aftercare:

When the plant is in active growth, water regularly and feed every few weeks with a liquid fertiliser. Rotate the pot every few days so the stalk grows evenly towards the light. After flowering, snip off the faded flower stem near the base but continue to care for the leaves. Water and feed throughout the summer months to build up the bulb’s energy. For flowers next year, stop watering in early autumn and give the bulb a cool, dark, dry rest for at least two months before starting the process over.
