Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

One of the oldest parrot tulips still in cultivation, 'Black Parrot' has been captivating gardeners since it was introduced in 1937. It is a sport of the single late tulip 'Philippe de Comines'.

The darkest and most dramatic of all parrot tulips, 'Black Parrot' is a true icon. It boasts huge, exotic-looking flowers with deeply lacinated, ruffled, and twisted petals in a sumptuous shade of deep velvety maroon-purple, so dark it appears almost black. In bright sunlight, flashes of rich purple and deep red can be seen within the petals, adding to its mystique. The texture is as impressive as the colour, with a satin sheen that catches the light beautifully. Held on strong, sturdy stems, these theatrical blooms make an unparalleled statement in the late spring border. They contrast magnificently with white, lime green, or bright orange tulips, creating a display of breathtaking drama and sophistication. A must-have for any gardener looking for a touch of the extraordinary.

Where to Plant:

This is one of the most dramatic and sought-after tulips, with huge, exotic, ruffled and feathered petals of a deep, velvety maroon-purple that appears almost black in some lights. Due to the large size of the flower heads, it is essential that they are planted in a sheltered position, protected from strong winds and heavy spring rain which can easily damage the blooms. They require a spot in full sun with fertile, very well-drained soil. They are a spectacular choice for a dramatic border display or as a stunning cut flower.

How to Plant:

Tulip bulbs should be planted late in the autumn, ideally in October or November. This later planting helps to reduce the risk of the fungal disease, Tulip Fire. Dig a hole and plant each bulb at a depth of at least twice its own height, which is typically about 15cm (6 inches) deep. Ensure the pointed tip is facing upwards. Space the bulbs about 10-15cm apart to give each magnificent flower enough room to be appreciated.

Aftercare:

For the biggest and best display, Parrot tulips are best treated as annuals, with fresh bulbs being planted each autumn. They are not reliable at re-flowering well in subsequent years. If you wish to try and save them, you must deadhead the flower as soon as it fades and feed the plant with a high-potassium fertiliser. Allow the foliage to die back and yellow completely before lifting the bulbs, drying them, and storing them somewhere cool and dark until it is time to replant in the autumn.
