Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Its graceful shape and vibrant colour are often said to be reminiscent of a flamenco dancer's swirling dress, while its famous sweet scent is a rare treat among tulips.

A true star of the spring garden, 'Ballerina' dances into the season with an explosion of vibrant colour and a heady, sweet fragrance. This acclaimed Lily-Flowering tulip, another holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, boasts slender, beautifully shaped flowers in a brilliant shade of tangerine-orange, often with subtle red flushing at the base. Its elegant form is defined by long, pointed petals that arch outwards, creating a graceful, chalice-like shape that glows in the sunshine. But perhaps its most lauded feature is its powerful and delicious scent, a sweet citrus perfume that can fill the air on a warm spring day. Standing on strong, tall stems, it's a versatile choice, equally at home in bold drifts in a border, as a standout in containers, or as a wonderfully fragrant addition to a vase. 'Ballerina' is a sensory delight that combines visual elegance with an unforgettable perfume.

Where to Plant:

A truly superb and deservedly popular lily-flowered tulip, 'Ballerina' is famed for its elegant, gracefully pointed petals that curve outwards. The flowers are a vibrant, glowing orange and they possess a wonderfully sweet, citrus-like fragrance. It is a fantastic choice for borders and is especially valuable in pots and containers placed near a path or patio where its perfume can be enjoyed. It needs a position in full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. It is also an outstanding cut flower.

How to Plant:

The bulbs should be planted late in the autumn, during October or November. Dig a generous hole and plant each bulb at least 15cm (6 inches) deep, or roughly twice the height of the bulb itself. Planting deeply in a sunny, well-drained spot is the key to encouraging it to flower for several years. Place the bulb with the pointed tip facing the sky and space them about 10-15cm apart to create a full display.

Aftercare:

This variety has a good reputation for returning year after year. To help it do so, deadhead the flowers once they have faded by snapping off the head. Allow the foliage to die back completely and turn yellow and straw-like before removing it; this takes about six weeks and is when the bulb builds up its energy for next year. Feeding with a liquid tomato feed after flowering until the foliage starts to yellow can also be very beneficial.
