Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

The name meleagris means "guineafowl," referring to the speckled, chequered pattern on the petals which resembles the plumage of the bird.

A beautiful and enchanting mix of the native Snakeshead Fritillary. This collection combines the classic chequered purple and the elegant pure white forms (var. alba). The delicate, nodding, bell-shaped flowers have a distinctive chequerboard pattern in shades of dusky purple and pink, mixed with the pristine white variety. They are held on slender, graceful stems above fine, grey-green foliage. This mix is perfect for naturalising in damp meadows, bog gardens, or under deciduous trees, where it will happily spread over the years to create a magical, fairy-tale scene in mid-spring.

Where to Plant:

Commonly known as the Snake's Head Fritillary, this is a charming and beautiful native British wildflower. Unlike the Crown Imperial, it requires a moist, humus-rich soil and will not tolerate drying out. It is perfect for naturalising in a damp lawn, creating a 'meadow' effect, or for a cool border that doesn't get baked in summer. It thrives in full sun or partial shade. The beautiful, chequered, bell-shaped flowers in shades of purple and white are a truly magical sight.

How to Plant:

The small bulbs are prone to drying out, so they should be planted as soon as possible in the autumn. Plant the bulbs at a depth of about 10-15cm (4-6 inches), with the pointed tip facing upwards. For the most effective and natural display, plant them in generous drifts rather than dotted about singly. Space them roughly 10-15cm apart. If planting in a lawn, lift a section of turf, scatter the bulbs, and replace the turf.

Aftercare:

The most critical part of aftercare is to ensure the soil does not dry out completely during late spring and summer. If they are naturalised in a lawn, you must not mow the area until the foliage has completely died back, which is usually not until June or July. This allows the bulbs to set seed and build up energy for the following year's display.
