Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Its name nivalis is Latin for 'of the snow'. The tips of its leaves are specially hardened to be able to push through frozen soil.

Welcome the new gardening year with the quintessential harbinger of spring, the Common Snowdrop. Galanthus nivalis brings delicate beauty to the late winter garden when little else is stirring. Its nodding, milky-white bell-shaped flowers, each tipped with a distinctive green V-shape on the inner petals, are a truly welcome sight. Winner of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, this hardy little bulb is perfect for naturalising in lawns, underplanting deciduous trees, or creating enchanting drifts in woodland settings. For a classic winter display, pair them with the golden yellows of Winter Aconites or the rich purples of early Crocus.

Where to Plant:

Snowdrops thrive in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil in a position with dappled shade, such as beneath deciduous trees and shrubs. They are perfect for woodland gardens, rockeries, the front of borders, or for naturalising in lawns.

How to Plant:

Plant dry bulbs in early autumn, around 10cm deep and 5-8cm apart, with the pointed tip facing upwards. Plant in generous drifts for the most natural and impactful display. Water well after planting.

Aftercare:

Leave the foliage to die back naturally after flowering; this is crucial for the bulb to store energy for the following year's display. Over time, clumps will multiply and can be lifted and divided 'in the green' (just after flowering) to spread them further around your garden.
