Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Named after the world's highest peak, 'Mount Everest' brings a cool, snowy elegance to the garden that shines brightest at dusk, almost glowing in the twilight.

An iconic and utterly reliable white allium, 'Mount Everest' brings pure, classic elegance to the garden border. It forms large, 6-inch globes of clean, crisp white flowers on strong stems that reach a stately 3-4 feet. The flowers have a beautiful, dense structure that holds up well in spring weather and lasts for weeks. 'Mount Everest' is incredibly versatile; it looks stunning planted in formal blocks, woven through a cottage garden planting, or used as a cool, calming counterpoint to brighter colours. As the flowers fade, the seed heads turn a lovely shade of tan and provide excellent winter interest.

Where to Plant:

To ensure the tall stems are strong and upright, and the large white flower heads are at their best, a site in full sun is essential. As with all large-flowered alliums, the soil must be very well-drained, as the bulbs are susceptible to rot in wet winter conditions. Its statuesque form and pure white globes make it a superb choice for the back or middle of a border, creating a sophisticated and architectural statement. It combines particularly well with deep green or purple foliage plants.

How to Plant:

Plant the large bulbs in the autumn. It is crucial to plant them deeply to provide stability for the tall stems, aiming for a depth of at least 15-20cm, with the pointed tip facing the sky. Space the bulbs about 30cm apart to give the impressive flower heads and foliage plenty of room. For a dramatic and elegant display, plant in bold clumps of three, five, or more. Water well once after planting to settle the soil around the bulbs.

Aftercare:

Once established, 'Mount Everest' is very drought-tolerant and low-maintenance. The most important step for ensuring a good display in subsequent years is to allow the large strap-like leaves to wither and die back completely. Do not remove the foliage while it is green, as this is when the bulb is replenishing its energy stores. The faded flower heads dry beautifully on the stem, creating striking spherical seed heads that provide structural interest long into the summer.
