Its glossy plum-purple bells open progressively from the base of each upright flower spike.

Fritillaria persica 'Purple Dynamite' is a particularly polished form of the Persian lily, producing stately spires set with glossy, plum-purple bells. The dark flowers and fresh green foliage make a sophisticated contrast in late-spring borders, gravel gardens and generous containers.

Supplied as impressive 20/24 bulbs, this RHS Award of Garden Merit variety has the presence to stand alone yet associates beautifully with pale tulips, alliums and airy perennials. It is an unusual, architectural choice for gardeners who favour plants with real distinction.

Where to Plant:

Fritillaria 'Purple Dynamite' needs a sunny, warm and sheltered position in fertile soil that drains freely. A raised bed, gravel garden or south-facing border is ideal, particularly where winter wet can be avoided.

How to Plant:

Plant the large 20/24 bulbs from September to December, setting them 15-20cm deep and 20-30cm apart. Place each bulb on its side to reduce the chance of water settling in the crown, and add grit beneath it where drainage is uncertain.

Aftercare:

Water after planting and during prolonged dry spells in spring, but never leave the bulbs waterlogged. Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering. In colder or wetter gardens, a dry mulch and protection from excessive winter rain will help the bulbs return strongly.
