Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Violet Beauty, often admired for its violet-purple flowers with pale/white centres colouring, is a bulb variety especially well suited to naturalising.

Chionodoxa luciliae ‘Violet Beauty’ is a most refined little bulb for early spring, sending up neat green leaves followed by starry, pale violet flowers, each softly brightened by a lighter centre. It is particularly lovely naturalised through grass, tucked into gravel, or threaded at the front of borders where its colour reads as a gentle wash rather than a shout.

  • Colour: Violet-purple flowers with pale/white centres
  • Flowering: March–April
  • Height: 15cm
  • Habit: Clump-forming; ideal for naturalising
  • Best placed: Borders, rockeries, gravel gardens, lawns (naturalising), under shrubs

Plant in autumn and allow it time to settle; within a couple of seasons it will look increasingly assured, returning faithfully and pairing beautifully with early crocus, miniature narcissus and the first primroses.

Where to Plant:

Chionodoxa 'Violet Beauty' (Forbes' squill) needs full-sun, partial sun and a warm, sheltered position for the best flowering. Plant into fertile, humus-rich soil that drains well, and choose a spot protected from strong winds, especially for taller varieties.

How to Plant:

Plant bulb from September to December once conditions are suitable. Set them at the correct depth for the variety, spacing 8-10cm apart where relevant, then firm in gently and water well after planting.

Aftercare:

Water regularly in dry weather and feed every two to three weeks once buds appear. Stake taller stems early and deadhead to keep plants flowering. After flowering, allow foliage to die back naturally before lifting or protecting bulb according to local conditions.
