A truly sophisticated and beautiful Lenten Rose, 'Double Ellen Green' is prized for its unique and elegant flowers. In late winter and early spring, it produces large, exquisite, fully double blooms. The flowers are composed of many layers of ruffled petals in a gorgeous shade of fresh, chartreuse or lime-green. Some flowers may have subtle, deeper green veining or a fine picotee edge of reddish-purple, adding to their complexity and charm. The nodding or outward-facing blooms are held on strong stems above handsome clumps of leathery, evergreen foliage. It brings a cool, refined elegance to the shady garden at a time when colour is scarce and provides a vital nectar source for early-pollinating insects. A must-have for any hellebore enthusiast or woodland garden.

Green flowers are relatively rare in the plant world. Green hellebores like this one are highly valued by floral designers for their unusual colour and long-lasting quality in arrangements.

This exquisite hellebore, with its beautiful, fully double green flowers, is a treasure for the winter and spring garden. It thrives in a position of partial or dappled shade, making it ideal for planting beneath deciduous trees and shrubs, or in a border that is shaded from the harsh midday sun. It prefers a fertile, humus-rich soil that is moist but well-drained. It will not tolerate waterlogged conditions, nor will it be happy in soil that gets baked dry in summer.
How to Plant:
Plant container-grown specimens from autumn through to spring. Dig a generous hole and enrich the soil with plenty of well-rotted organic matter such as leaf mould or garden compost. Gently place the plant in the hole, ensuring the crown, where the leaves emerge from the roots, is at the same level as the surrounding soil; planting too deeply can cause the plant to rot. Backfill, firm gently and water in well. Space plants about 45cm apart.
Aftercare:
The most important annual task is to carefully cut off all the old, large leaves right back to the base of the plant in late winter, around January. This tidies the plant, exposes the beautiful emerging flowers to view, and helps prevent the spread of fungal diseases like hellebore leaf spot. After flowering, an application of a general-purpose fertiliser and a mulch of organic matter will help to ensure a good display the following year.

I ordered the mixed hyacinth collection and the scent in my garden this April was absolutely heavenly. Every single bulb produced a strong, beautiful flower and the colours were stunning together. A fantastic purchase, I'll be back for more next year!
