Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

The Latin name uva-vulpis literally translates to "fox's grape," which perfectly describes the shape and dusky purple colour of the flower buds before they open, resembling a small bunch of grapes.

A charming and subtle species, Fritillaria uva-vulpis, the fox's grape fritillary, produces slender stems with one or two elegant, nodding, bell-shaped flowers in mid-spring. The blooms are a unique and beautiful dusky purple-maroon on the outside, with a distinct, tightly rolled rim of bright golden-yellow that looks as if it has been perfectly dipped in paint. The inside of the bell is a glossy, olive-green. This is a delightful and very easy-to-grow fritillary, perfect for naturalising in borders, rock gardens, or damp meadows where it will happily multiply over the years to form a beautiful colony.

Where to Plant:

Commonly known as the Fox's Grape Fritillary, this is a charming, subtle, and very reliable garden plant. It is far less demanding than its larger cousins, growing happily in full sun or partial shade. It prefers a humus-rich, well-drained soil that doesn't completely dry out in summer. It is perfect for creating natural-looking drifts at the front of a border, or for planting under the canopy of deciduous shrubs and trees. Its dainty, nodding, bell-shaped flowers are a unique combination of dusky purple and old gold.

How to Plant:

Plant the small bulbs in the autumn. Plant them at a depth of about 10-15cm (4-6 inches) with the pointed tip facing upwards. They are small and inexpensive bulbs, and their subtle colouring is most effective when they are planted in large numbers. For a beautiful display, plant them in generous clumps or drifts of at least ten or more, spacing them about 10cm apart.

Aftercare:

This is one of the easiest and most perennial of all the fritillaries. After flowering, simply allow the narrow leaves to die back naturally. It will happily multiply and spread to form a larger colony over the years with no special attention, provided the soil does not get bone dry in summer. It is a truly low-maintenance and rewarding bulb.
