Avalanche' is so prolific it has earned the nickname "Seventeen Sisters," referring to its ability to produce a huge number of flowers on each stem, far more than most other daffodils.

An incredible and justly famous heirloom, 'Avalanche' is a Tazetta daffodil that truly lives up to its name by producing an avalanche of flowers. Each robust stem carries a huge cluster of up to 20 fragrant blooms, creating a spectacular and long-lasting display from a single bulb. The individual flowers are charming, with pure white, slightly reflexed petals surrounding a small, neatly ruffled, lemon-yellow cup. The sweet, musky fragrance is powerful and can perfume a large area of the garden. This RHS Award-winning variety is vigorous, reliable, and a fantastic perennialiser, bringing increasing cheer and scent to the mid-spring garden year after year.

Where to Plant:

This exceptional daffodil is from the Tazetta group, famed for producing multiple, highly fragrant flowers on each stem, sometimes up to fifteen or more. It is often called the 'Seventeen Sisters'. For the best performance in the UK, choose a warm, sunny, and sheltered location to help the bulbs ripen well in summer. It is perfect for a sunny border against a house wall, or for growing in large pots on a patio where its sweet scent can be enjoyed. It thrives in fertile, well-drained soil.

How to Plant:

The bulbs should be planted in the autumn, ideally in September or October. Dig a hole to a depth roughly twice the height of the bulb itself, which is typically around 15cm (6 inches). Place the bulb in the hole with the pointed tip facing upwards and cover with soil. Space bulbs at least 10-15cm apart to give each multi-flowered stem enough room to develop without being crowded. Water the area once after planting.

Aftercare:

After the perfumed flowers have faded, you can snip off the spent flower heads to prevent the plant from putting energy into seed production. The most important step is to allow the foliage to die back naturally for a minimum of six weeks after flowering. Do not cut it off or tie it up during this period, as the leaves are feeding the bulb for next year's display. In colder regions, a dry winter mulch can offer extra protection.
