Our "Bloom or Bust" Promise

Red Mohican' is a cultivated form of Allium flavum subsp. tauricum, a species native to Turkey, which explains its preference for sunny, well-drained spots.

A truly unique and captivating variety, 'Red Mohican' is a guaranteed conversation starter in any garden. It shares the distinctive oval shape of its drumstick relatives but with an unforgettable twist. The main body of the flowerhead is a tight globe of deep maroon-red florets, from which erupts a whimsical crest of longer, sterile florets, creating a striking tuft or "mohawk" at the top. This playful, bi-level structure provides fascinating texture and form. Plant them where they can be admired up close, such as along a pathway or at the front of a border. Their quirky personality shines when planted in clusters, where their collective crests create a delightfully punk-rock effect that adds rhythm and a touch of rebellious fun to your planting scheme.

Where to Plant:

For the best results and strongest stems, a position in full sun is essential. This unusual allium is prized for its quirky, egg-shaped, maroon flower heads which develop a crest of tiny white flowers, giving it its name. It demands well-drained soil and is an excellent choice for a gravel garden or a sunny border where its unique form can be appreciated. Plant it in the middle of a border where it can rise above lower-growing perennials, creating a fun and interesting talking point.

How to Plant:

Plant the bulbs in the autumn, from September to November. Position each bulb with the pointed tip facing upwards, planting to a depth of approximately 10-15cm. This is roughly three to four times the height of the bulb itself and provides a sturdy anchor. Space the bulbs about 15-20cm apart to give each plant room to stand out. For a captivating display, plant them in groups or drifts, allowing their slender silhouettes to punctuate the planting scheme.

Aftercare:

This is a very easy allium to care for. It is important to note that the foliage will often start to wither and die back before the flowers have fully opened; this is perfectly normal for this variety. After the flowers have faded, allow the stem to yellow and dry naturally. The spent seed heads have good structural form and can be left on the plant for extended interest. It is drought-tolerant once established and will not require any supplemental watering.
