Also known as Rosy Garlic, Allium roseum is a charming and carefree wildflower that brings a touch of the Mediterranean countryside to any garden. It produces loose, delicate clusters of pretty, bell-shaped, soft pink flowers on slender stems. Unlike the formal globes, these have a relaxed, informal habit that is perfect for naturalising in gravel gardens, sunny banks, or wilder parts of the garden. It multiplies readily, creating larger and more impressive drifts each year. It's a low-maintenance and subtle beauty that provides a gentle wash of colour and attracts pollinators in droves.

Where to Plant:

Commonly known as Rosy Garlic, this charming species thrives in a sunny spot in any well-drained soil. It produces delicate, loose clusters of pale pink, bell-shaped flowers and is perfect for creating a soft, meadow-like feel. It is an excellent choice for naturalising in a lawn, at the front of a sunny border, or in a rockery or gravel garden. While it flowers best in full sun, it is quite adaptable and will tolerate a little light shade.

How to Plant:

Plant the small bulbs during the autumn months. As they are not large, a planting depth of 8-10cm is sufficient, with the pointed tip facing towards the sky. For the most effective and natural-looking display, plant them in generous, informal drifts rather than in neat rows. Space the bulbs around 8cm apart to allow them to form substantial colonies over time. A single watering after planting is all that is required to get them started.

Aftercare:

This is a wonderfully low-maintenance plant that will reward you with an increasing display each year. After flowering has finished, allow the grassy foliage to die back completely to replenish the bulb's energy stores for the following season. Allium roseum will happily self-seed and spread where it is happy, so site it somewhere you are content for it to naturalise and form larger clumps. There is no need to deadhead.
